6818BMW 5 Series Next Gen Spy Shots 001 Next gen BMW 5 Series sedan spotted with production body, possible PHEV

The current BMW 5 Series is just a few years old since its 2009 debut, but the Bavarians are already preparing to put the model out to pasture. Here’s our first glimpse at the production bodywork for the next-gen sedan after spotting the wagon version during testingtwice.

While the cladding and swirling camouflage make specific details difficult to discern, it doesn’t look like we should expect any massive changes in design language from the new model. The nose appears to dip a bit more at the tip of the front end, but otherwise there’s no way to mistake this as anything other than a 5 Series. Squint hard enough at the front left fender and you can notice what seems to be a small door. Our spies think that this might be hiding the charging port for a plug-in hybrid version.

While the styling doesn’t appear to be changing much, the next 5er reportedly has a new platform underneath the skin that supposedly will help it shed around 220 pounds. The debut for this lighter but likely similar looking BMW is expected sometime in 2016.

fc0701 2015 bmw i8 fd 1 Top Gear names BMW i8 Car of the Year, Corvette, Ferrari, Mercedes also win big

The lads at Top Gear have released their listing of the finest cars of the past year, handing the ultimate honor to BMW’s revolutionary i8 plug-in-hybrid supercar.

“The i8 is a milestone in the annals of automotive history and a glorious statement for an exciting and positive future. The i8 delivers – and then some,” the British mag wrote. The i8, though, was far from the only hybridized car to take victories. James May and Richard Hammond both highlighted hybrids as their personal cars of the year, with May saluting the Ferrari LaFerrari and the Hamster, unsurprisingly, heaping praise on the Porsche 918 Spyder. Jeremy Clarkson, meanwhile, opted to shock many by selecting not only an American car as his best of 2014, but giving the honor to of all things, a Corvette.

Clarkson wasn’t the only person to honor the USA’s iconic sports car, with the new, 650-horsepower Z06 variant being named TG’s Muscle Car of the Year. Other big winners include Mercedes-Benz, which TG honored for S-Class Coupe (Luxury Car of the Year), the new AMG GT (Sports Car of the Year) and the not-for-US C-Class Estate (Family Car of the Year). The 458 Italia Speciale A snagged a second win for Ferrari.

The best of the rest include the Citroen C4 Cactus, Renault Twingo, Volkswagen Golf R, Lamborghini Huracan and Audi TT.

81172013 bmw 6 series gran coupe 001 Next BMW 6 Series, M6 to take aim at Porsche

Since BMW reintroduced the 6 Series line back in 2003, the big two-door has happily sat as the brand’s de facto grand tourer. That will allegedly change come 2017, as Car is reporting that Munich will put its coupe on a diet with the so-called G15 generation, allowing the 6 to go after the likes of Porsche.

All three of the current 6’s body styles will be carried over for 2017, with the base 640i Coupe trimming over 500 pounds of body fat, to around 3,450 pounds. Even the droptop is getting some lipo, dropping from 4,255 to around 3,750 pounds. It’s unclear how much the Gran Coupe will be lightened, as it will be the only member of the 6 Series family that’s growing in size. BMW will stretch the wheelbase of its fullsize, four-door coupe, which should make it decidedly more sedan like.

The weight savings come thanks to a new modular architecture that promises a “more advanced material mix.” That means carbon fiber, high-strength steel and aluminum elements, and even some titanium and magnesium bits.

Along with xDrive all-wheel drive, Car is promising new six- and eight-cylinder engines, with the 640i’s 3.0-liter, turbocharged gas engine producing 347 horsepower while the diesel mill turns out 333. The 4.4-liter V8 of the 650i will deliver 476 ponies, while the range-topping M6’s twin-turbo V8 will reach the magical 600-hp figure.

Of course, we can expect to hear more about the next 6 in the coming months and years. In the meantime, though, let us know what you think of Car‘s positing below, in Comments.

d5a0bmw 7 series spy 04 Next BMW 7 Series interior spotted

fef3bmw 7 series spy 01 Next BMW 7 Series interior spottedThe next BMW 7 Series looks to be leading a rather dramatic change of the company’s interior styling, judging by this new series of spy photos.

In the trio of shots, we can see that the next 7 Series will replace the high-quality plastic buttons of the brand’s iDrive, HVAC and secondary audio controls with some very, very pretty aluminum pieces. We can also see what looks like haptic touch controls for some of the HVAC systems. While the 7 Series interior has never been bad, it’s lagged notably behind the Audi A8 and new Mercedes-Benz S-Class. This brightwork should be taken as a good sign, then, that BMW is preparing to take the fight to its countrymen. Aside from the handsome new switchgear, the large, wide nav screen looks like a pop-up unit, while it appears to be running a new version of the company’s infotainment system.

These spy photos also give us our most detailed look at the 7 Series’ new laser headlights. According to our spies, these will be an optional extra, while LED headlights will be standard. The high-output lights will flank a wider pair of kidney grilles that our spies claim will give the 7 a sportier look. Changes in back are still camouflaged, although our shooters claim the new lamps will be more angular than the current car’s.

Expect the next 7 Series to make its debut in the second half of 2015, which could indicate a debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

893dJeep grand cherokee srt hellcat 628 Six shut up and take my money cars

aa10Shut up and take my money 628 Six shut up and take my money carsAny time you see this iconic moment in pop culture – Shut up and take my money! – posted in response to a new car reveal, rumor for an upcoming model or even lip-service to a vehicle that should exist, you can bet there’s some intrinsic good in the idea. Though depending on the person offering up the cash, that good could take the form of extraordinary form, functionality, weight savings, power, handling, etc. You get the idea.

In fact, when I first proposed this list, I reached out to the BMW Top News staff to help me brainstorm. Here are some of the ideas they offered up that I ultimately didn’t use: Jaguar XE Coupe, Pagani Huayra Roadster, Mercedes-Benz S-Class “parade car” (cabriolet), Morgan 3-Wheeler with Ducati V-twin, Ford Transit Connectamino (pickup), Mercedes CLA63 AMG, Ford Fusion 5.0, BMW i8 Spyder, Lexus RC-F Shooting Brake, Volvo XC90 Polestar. Oh, and things we collectively wanted to stick Dodge’s Hellcat in were almost as numerous as models that Fiat Chrysler Automotive currently makes (though none quite so compelling as the Grand Cherokee you see above.)

Ultimately though, while I used a couple of ideas from my colleagues, the list of cars I’d shell out for unquestionably is very personal. Though it isn’t complete, what follows is a selection of cars whose very existence would prompt me – or the trust-fund-baby versions of me – to utter without hesitation: “Shut up and take my money.”

Read, enjoy, and then post your own list of Take My Money Cars in Comments below – make Fry proud.

89e1bmw 1 series spy 06 BMW 1 Series sedan interior revealed

8730bmw 1 series spy 01 BMW 1 Series sedan interior revealedThe next BMW 1 Series Sedan has made another appearance following our last peek at it in September, and this time, the gallery of images even reveals part of the new car’s interior.

Of course, if these images prove anything, it’s that manufacturers take camouflage of the interior just as seriously as they do the exterior. We can see in these images a fairly simple cabin, with what looks like a fixed central display. It’s quite small, although the housing itself is rather large, so we could be looking at a more basic form of iDrive rather than the full-featured set. Overall, though, this cabin more or less confirms that the 1 Series Sedan will fit in with the rest of the BMW family quite nicely.

Outside of the interior images, though, there isn’t a lot of new stuff revealed by these images. As for when we’ll see both the interior and exterior fully undisguised, our spies continue pointing to a 2016 debut with a 2017 on-sale date.

Take a look at the images, up top.

2c44bmw x4 m40i spy 02 1 BMW X4 M40i caught production ready

It seems like BMW is pretty committed to this whole X4 thing. Aside from the current xDrive28i and xDrive35i, we’ve captured a round of spy photos showing what our spy shooters tell us is a more dynamic M40i model.

The higher-performance hunchback follows in the footsteps of BMW’s other sub-M cars like the M235i. In fact, much like the high-po 2 Series, the M40i is expected to make use of a 3.0-liter, turbocharged six-cylinder, developing 365 to 375 horsepower.

Aside from that, the rest of the X4 M40i fits the brief of other near-M models, with a more aggressive body kit, larger wheels, firmer suspension and brawnier brakes. Expect some mild tweaks inside, too, including sportier seats and an M-specific steering wheel.

Judging by the uncamouflaged nature of this tester caught testing on Germany’s Nürburgring, production will kick off before the end of the year, perhaps in December. That means a LA Auto Show debut is likely, provided BMW opts to sell the hotter X4 in the US market. Take a look above for our full gallery of spy photos.
