BMW’s X6 has proven to be an unlikely hit – so much so that the Bavarians have followed up with this kid brother X4 for 2015, a genre-splitting model that promises to be all things to all people. We spent a week with it to find out if it’s worth the extra dough over the X3 upon which it’s based.

940bkimmel krasinski Watch Emily Blunt and John Krasinski prank Jimmy Kimmels SUV

Jimmy Kimmel has a bit of a rivalry going with Emily Blunt and John Krasinski. Not like the “I’m on television, you’re on the radio” one he has with his former Man Show co-host Adam Carolla (who of course has more to do with cars than the last name he almost shares with a Toyota economy sedan). With Blunt and Krasinski, it’s more of a prank rivalry.

The Hollywood couple, you see, live across the street from Kimmel, and they’re all good friends. But during the holiday season, things get a little competitive. One year they broke into Jimmy’s house and left an illuminated snowman and some sort of santa bear in his foyer. Jimmy retaliated, the Krasinskis escalated, and up and up things went until Jimmy had their entire house wrapped like a gift.

John and Emily weren’t going to leave it at that, though, and took things in a decidedly more automotive direction. They gift-wrapped the host’s BMW X5 and filled it with balls. But they didn’t stop there. You’ll want to watch the footage above to see how things ended, just take note of the roll cage visible as Krasinski-Clause stumbles out of the car in that last scene and remember that, while we couldn’t say no vehicles were actually harmed in the making of this segment, at least it doesn’t appear to have actually been Kimmel’s.

3aa1slide 0009 Weekly Recap: Mercedes continues the pseudo coupe craze with AMG tuned CUV

But as BMW’s X6 has demonstrated, sport sells in in the crossover segment, and Mercedes is giving the people what they want.

BMW proved there is a market for crossover utility vehicles designed to look like coupes – as much as a vehicle with four doors and noticeable ground clearance can look like a coupe, anyway. Now comes the reply from Mercedes-Benz: the GLE Coupe.

The rakish crossover is a harbinger of things to come from Mercedes, as it begins the company’s transition to a new nomenclature and marks the debut of the AMG Sport line. It also continues the recent coupe craze. Designers from many automakers, like Nissan and Volkswagen, have increasingly turned to swoopy, dramatic styling to make utility vehicles and sedans seem more desirable.

By revealing the GLE 450 AMG Sport model first, Mercedes is clearly hoping to cast the GLE Coupe as a sportier, lifestyle-oriented alternative in its lineup of beefy crossovers and SUVs. Mercedes used the word “sport,” or a variation of it, 53 times in its press release, so uh yeah, it’s sporty.

a6b9P90169883 highRes BMW shows 670 hp plug in 5 Series GT concept

BMW quietly revealed a 5 Series GT concept earlier this week at an event in France, and it sports a plug-in hybrid powertrain capable of a whopping 670 horsepower.

Think the upcoming Model X crossover from Tesla sounds good? BMW has something that might be just as enticing for eco enthusiasts who like their cars to be green and mean.

BMW quietly revealed a 5 Series GT concept earlier this week at an event in France, and it sports a plug-in hybrid powertrain capable of a whopping 670 horsepower. That’s right, a hybrid BMW hatch-crossover with more estimated power than the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06.

BMW’s setup is called “Power eDrive,” and it uses a 20-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack that provides juice for two electric motors; they work with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. This 5 Series GT would be able to travel for 62 miles under electric power.

The prototype shows the high-performance potential of the system, but the 5 Series GT is “purely a concept,” BMW spokesman Julian Arguelles told BMW Top News.

The GT made its global debut alongside plug-in versions of the 3 Series and X5. They used more basic eDrive systems with one electric motor teamed with a turbo four cylinder.

BMW revealed the prototypes to illustrate its plans to increase production of plug-in hybrids. Its goal is to add plug-in variants to all of its “core-brand models,” though specifics and timing are unclear.
