The BMW 5 series overview

There a number of different cars within the BMW 5 series range – such as the saloon, Touring, Convertible and Gran Turismo Hatchback models. This is an overview of the pros and cons of each of the cars in this 5 series.

The BMW 5 series saloon

This model is likely to be the most popular – and the biggest seller – for the average car driver. The 5 series saloon offers marvellous design and comfort levels, with clear, easy-to-use dashboard design and more than enough internal space for four people to sit comfortably. In terms of safety features it has the standard six airbags along with stability control feature and a spring-loaded bonnet – which should make it safer both for passengers and pedestrians. On the downside the problems of rough driving caused by the suspension system can only be solved by investing in expensive upgrades to the system.

The BMW 5 series Touring

There are many similarities with the saloon editions of the BMW 5 series, as this model also provides excellently straightforward dashboard layout and the widescreen monitor system, operated via the rotary controller on the iDrive – although it may seem strange at first, to those used to the touch screen – will probably prove to be easier to use for most people once they have adjusted to it. The Touring models are really for those who require a bit more storage space, as they feature a bigger boot – 1670 litres of space, when the rear seats are folded down – than the saloon models.

The BMW 5 series Gran Turismo Hatchback

The semi-SUV Hatchback has many of the same pros and cons of the other models in the BMW 5 series, with the major flaw being the problems with road surfaces. It is simply impossible to get a smooth ride, even on the best roads, while on bad ones the bumping and jolting can be a serious problem. Nonetheless, this is countered by the excellent handling, ensuring that the driver should never lose control of the vehicle. Furthermore the reliability and comfort levels are second to none.

If you are looking to buy any of the cars in the BMW 5 Series range but they are a bit out of your price range, you can always pick up a used BMW 5 series for a more affordable price and still in good condition either online or at your local used car dealership.

2013 BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe

Better late than never, right?

We’re now on the second generation of the Mercedes-Benz CLS, the luxury sedan that kicked off the whole “four-door coupe” craze. Since then, Volkswagen countered with the CC, Porsche launched the Panamera, and Audi won us over with its A7. So what about BMW? Now that the big 6 Series coupe has taken hold, the German automaker has added a proper back seat and two additional doors to create this, the 2013 6 Series Gran Coupe.

The first version of the Gran Coupe to arrive Stateside will be the 640i, powered by BMW’s N55 3.0-liter turbocharged inline six, good for 315 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque in this application. Shortly thereafter, the 650i Gran Coupe will arrive, available with rear-wheel drive or xDrive all-wheel drive, boasting a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 tuned to 445 hp and 480 lb-ft. Both engines are paired with BMW’s ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic transmission.

Compared to its two-door counterpart, the Gran Coupe is a full 4.4 inches longer, and most of that added length benefits the rear passengers. BMW’s literature states that the stretched 6 Series has a 4+1 seating configuration, meaning there’s actually a quasi-usable seat between the two outboard rear positions. (Good luck.) Judging from the photos, the Gran Coupe’s interior is as luxuriously appointed and tech-laden as the rest of the 6 Series range – if not a little bit moreso.

We originally thought that BMW would debut the 2013 6 Series Gran Coupe at next month’s Detroit Auto Show, but since the all-new 2012 3 Series is expected to make its public debut at Cobo Hall, we think BMW may hold off on the official Gran Coupe introduction until the Geneva Motor Show in March.

BMW X6 M550d specs supposedly leak, hits 60 mph in under 4,9 seconds

When the official source of a rumor calls it a rumor, the grain of salt grows proportionately. But according to the crew at BMWBlog, the recently teased BMW X6 M550d will come packing 381 horsepower and a pavement ripping 545 pound-feet of torque.

The news comes courtesy of unnamed sources that say the first diesel from the M division will supposedly pack a tri-turbo, six-cylinder diesel nestled beneath a modified hood. Two versions are rumored to be available: a traditional RWD variant badged the M550D and an all-wheel-drive version that appends the xDrive moniker to the end. BMWBlog’s people on the inside say that the RWD model will hit 60 mph in 4.9 seconds, with the AWD doing the deed in 4.7 ticks.

The good news: The M-fettled diesel X6 will reportedly go on sale in March of 2012. The bad news: It’s a Euro-only affair.
